This is about an incident that happened with me at HyperCity, Navi Mumbai.
On a usual day I went to purchase some grocery items at this place. One of the items in the cart was a bag of 1 kg gram flour worth ₹170/-. After loading my cart with all the needed items I calculated the price in my mind, which came up to ₹300/- and proceeded to the billing counter.
The lady at the counter scanned all my items and asked me to pay ₹440/-.I was shocked for a moment but was sure that I couldn't have miscalculated the value by such a huge margin. Before handing over the cash I took a look at the screen and saw an item worth ₹310/- and asked the lady about it. She clicked on it and said that it was for the bag of 1kg gram floor. I asked her how did the price on the price tag(printed my Hypercity) say ₹170/- but the bar-code on the very same price tag show the price as ₹310/- ?
She then apologized to me and asked one of the employees to change it. After which the bill came to ₹295/-( 10 rupee discount and +5 for a plastic bag). Now, I could spot the price discrepancy as there were not many items and I have an habit of mentally adding up the value of my purchases before hand. Many people come to shop at this place and most of them fill their carts. If I had filled my cart with a lot of items too and not bothered to check prices of individual items, I would probably have ended paying the extra ₹140/-.
This reminded me of a similar incident about a year ago,a the same place, where my father purchased some potatoes where the rate mentioned on the shelf was ₹20/kg and the rate shown while billing was ₹22/kg.
