Having faced this multiple times in Hyderabad, I'm sure many people must have been duped by this tactic used by petrol pumps in India.
Here's how it unfolds:
You go to a petrol pump in a car and ask for petrol/ diesel to be filled, for say Rs 2000.
The guy(G1) fills up petrol worth Rs 200 (usually 201/202) and stops.
Then another guy (G2) standing beside creates a fuss loud enough for you to hear it and scolds G1 that the amount specified was 2000 and not 200.
The scam starts now:
G2 asks G1 to start filling the car with the meter reading 0 again, and starts conversing with you.
He might ask you if the payment is by card or by cash, whether you want additional services like cleaning of the windshield, or ask you for 1 or 2 rupees change because they filled the tank initially for Rs 201/202.
Meanwhile, G1 does not reset the meter to 0, and fills the tank upto Rs 1800 (telling you that Rs 200 was filled before).
You, happily pay Rs 2000 and leave.
This way they earn Rs 200. Multiply it by the number of cars they do this to in a day, and they earn several thousand rupees everyday.
Hope you remember this the next time you visit the petrol pump.
